Director Shankar, known for making all his films in a grand and entertaining manner, runs a production house titled ‘S’ Pictures. The company has been making films at low or medium budgets while spotting and giving opportunities to talented actors, technicians and directors through the films it makes.
The films produced under the banner of ‘S’ Pictures include ‘Kaadhal’, ‘Veyil’, ‘Imsai Arasan…’, ‘Kalloori’, ‘Arai Enn…’ and ‘Rettaichuzhi’. The first four films did reasonably good business at the box office besides introducing interesting talents to Tamil films like actress Sandhya, director Simbudevan and Tamannaah.
However, ‘Arai Enn…’, ‘Rettaichuzhi’ and the latest ‘Ananthapurathu Veedu’ faltered at the box-office thereby incurring huge losses to the director. He was, however, relieved that last year’s thriller ‘Eeram’ produced under his banner did reasonable business besides introducing Thaman as music director.
In order to minimize the losses, Shankar has reportedly decided to temporarily suspend all his production activities and instead concentrate on directing others’ films once he finishes the post-production work of Rajni’s ‘ Enthiran: The Robot ’ and releases it.
He is said to have turned back many prospective directors who recently approached him with challenging scripts. When queried, sources at Shankar’s office said that though Shankar wasn’t winding up his production house, he just wanted to ‘take a break’ from production as and when he came across a sure-fire script he was confident of hitting the bull’s eye.
