Noted South Indian playback singer and National award winner Swarnalatha died at a private hospital here today following lung infection. She was 37.

Born in Kerala’s Palakkad district, Ms. Swarnalatha had sung in various languages including Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam since 1989.
She won the 1995 National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her song ‘Porale Ponnuthayi’, composed by A R Rahman, in the Tamil film ‘Karuththamma’.
Ms. Swarnalatha, who was also a dubbing artiste, is survived by parents.
Expressing shock over the death of Ms. Swarnalatha, playback singer and music director M G Sreekumar said her demise was a loss to Indian film music.

Aged 37, Swarnalatha was suffering from lung problems for the past few months and on Sunday morning breathed her last at a private hospital in Adyar.
Apart from winning National award for her ‘Porale Ponnu Thai’, most of her songs have been chartbusters that includes ‘Raakkama Kaiyya Thattu’ in ‘Thalapathy’ and more than dozen of songs for A.R. Rahman.
Noted playback singer Swarnalatha, who had been unwell for quite some time now, passed away at a private hospital in Chennai on the morning of Sunday, the 12th September. The singer, who hit dizzying heights of fame with her duet ‘Povomaa Oorgolam’ in Maestro Ilaiyaraaa’s ‘Chinnathambi’, was all but 37 years of age when she breathed her last.
Hailing from Palghat District of the neighbouring Kerala, which has been sending highly successful Malayalee actresses to Kollywood on a regular basis, Swarnalatha’s first major song was for actress Meena. Her song, ‘Kuyil Paattu…’, was a runaway hit, thanks to the evergreen musical score by the Maestro.
For the past 21 years, Swarnalatha has sung in many languages including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Urdu and Badaga in the composition of musicl greates such as M.S. Viswanathan, Ilaiyaraaja, Deva and A.R. Rehman. She debuted as playback singer in Ilaiyaraaja’s ‘Captain Prabhakaran’ where she sang for item number and the song was ‘Aattama Therottama…’
Her solo number ‘Maalayil Yaaro…’, which she sang for a saree-clad Bhanupriya (again in Maestro’s music) for the film ‘Chatriyan’, came in for some huge appreciation. She followed it up with films like ‘Chinnathambi’, ‘Chinnavar’, ‘Chinna Jamee’, ‘Thalapathi’, ‘Valli’, ‘Veera’, etc. She also won the national award for the ‘best playback singer’ for her song ‘Poraalae…’ in ‘Karuthamma’, directed by veteran director Bharathiraaja.
The late Swarnalatha was a competent keyboard player as well as a harmonium exponent besides mesmerizing audiences the world over with her lingering voice.
