Film distributors have lodged a formal complaint with the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tirunelveli that the illegal and pirated CD/DVD versions of the recently released films like ‘Suraa’ and ‘Singam’ are sold blatantly in the open markets in places like Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Nagercoil.
Distributors from Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari Districts met Mr. Shanmuga Rajeshwaran, DIG, Tirunelveli Range, and submitted a complaint to him stating that in Tirunelveli alone, more than 100 film distributors were operating. The theatrical run of many new films have been severely hampered by the video piracy which is thriving in a big way in these areas, they had said.
“It has come to our notice that the pirated CD/DVD versions of new films like ‘Suraa’, ‘Singam’, ‘Angaadi Theru’ and ‘Goripalayam’ are sold blatantly in the open market in places like Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Nagercoil. We checked it personally and found out about the sales of these pirated CDs. If the trend continues, it would ‘kill’ the distribution business altogether.
“We (distributors) invest crores of rupees in the distribution of films and incur huge losses because of the sale of pirated CDs by vested interests.
We, therefore, request you to take stringent against those who indulge in the manufacture and sale of pirated CD/DVDs of newly-released films,” the petition stated.
The DIG assured the film distributors of early action in this regard.
