The 82nd Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” has conquered James Cameron’s “Avatar” in the Academy Awards night at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood late in last evening. The Iraqi-themed film has grabbed six awards including the prestigious Best Film honor and Best Director.
Both the “Avatar” and “The Hurt Locker” have been nominated in nine categories for the Oscars this year. Bigelow’s film, which narrates the tale of an U.S. bomb disposal team to Iraq has nabbed another four medals for the Best Screenplay, Sound Mixing, Film Editing and Sound Editing. Ironically, “Avatar” only won three insignificant awards in the categories of Visual Effects, Art Direction and Cinematography.
This year’s Oscars brought a big win for woman artists. For the first time in the history of Academy Awards, a woman has earned the best direction award. Before this, there were just four nominations for women artists to be proud of under this category.

In her offstage address to media, Bigelow hoped that her triumph would be an inspiration for upcoming women artists. She also said that her former husband, James Cameron was an inspiration, not for her but for whole the world.
“Jim is very inspiring. I think he inspires filmmakers around the world, and for that, I think I can speak for all of them. We’re quite grateful,” Bigelow said.
James was sitting just behind Bigelow in the audience and he joined the standing ovation when the Bigelow mounted that podium to collect her award.
The Oscars, 2010 was also phenomenal with several first time winners in the list. Sandra Bullock was named as the best actress for her role in “The Blind Side”; Jeff Bridges as the best actor for “Crazy Heart.” Both the winners in Supporting Roles, Mo’Nique, best actress for “Precious: Based on the Novel `Push’ by Sapphire”; and Christoph Waltz, best actor for “Inglourious Basterds” are also new to Oscars.
