SouthDreamZ has two good reasons for you to watch Kuruvi – Vijay‘s dance and Vivek‘s comedy. But we have whole lots of reasons why not to watch it? The film in many aspects disappoints you all and even fans of Vijay will have their hopes dashed. One thing that made me rush for this movie was the great team joining hands. Director Dharani‘s previous flicks Dhill, Dhool and Ghilli were off a great blockbuster that had enough pace to push audiences push to the edge of their seats, but Kurivi with no doubt pushes them out of theatres even before the movie would get over.
What is so special about Kuruvi? Yeah! With the same expectations I fleeted to stick to my seat for watching this great flick. But, it was a great letdown with the screenplay lacking pace, the usual story and Oh my God! The inevitable annoying stunts that are sure to get you annoyed.
Story of Kuruvi goes this way…
The film opens at Cudappa in Andhra Pradesh where Singamuthu (Manivannan) and his colleagues are tortured by a baddy tycoon Koccha (Suman) and his friend local MLA (Ashish Vidhyarthi). Unbearable circumstances forces Singamuthu to vow that his son will one day fulfill his revenge on him. Immediately, you have computerized map travelling from Cudappa to Chennai. Asides the slum near Chennai Central Station, Vetrivel (Vijay) along with his family members lead a happy life though he is prone to lots of debts pended by his father, who is none other than Singamuthu. But according to the entire family, their perception is that Singamuthu has eloped for financial crisis.
At a point, a stranger arrives at his place asking him to vacate the house since his father’s cheque of Rs. 50 Lakhs had earlier bounced from Malayasia. Sooner, Vetrivel along with his friend have to rush for the foreign land as Kuruvi – a carrier who exchanges goods in and out from a country to another. This is done in order to find the person who had drafted the cheque of Rs.50 Lakhs to his father.
Over there in Malaysia, he gets to know that its Koccha who has drafted the cheque and requests him to settle the amount so that he can return back. In turn, its only the problems that rise once the bank statements and evidences are destroyed by Koccha’s brother-in-law (Akash). Now Koccha remembers the vows enunciated by Singamuthu of his son deteriorating the entire baddies and saving the entire group of slaves.
But the interesting fact is that Vetrivel doesn’t know that his father hasn’t eloped, but is eloped by the same Koccha for unknown reasons… Rest of the story takes you along the plot with the story behind the secrets lying behind Vetrivel’s knowledge.
As mentioned earlier, Vijay with his dance and stunts steals the show. Be it an emotional one or a comedic moment, he deserves the best of all the applauses. But it’s the stunts that hinders the pace of screenplay for it keeps happening right throughout the film. The genre of Action-thriller doesn’t mean that it should be comprised only of more action oriented sequences. When comes to comparison between with Ghilli, it lacks something great. Be it the placement of songs or annoying absurdities, audiences is thrown to the pits of annoyance.
The scene where Vijay replaces Diamond with sugar candy within 10 seconds conveys that audiences who are watching the movie are fools. With this attitude, Dharani continues the same approach in other scenes too. Vijay jumping towards from a high place to get in through a running train, makes us doubt whether is he aiming for train or aero plane flying above.
Trisha with lots of overacting hasn’t done anything special in any attributes. I have something interesting for choreographers, indeed a tough competition. Any one among them would be considered as the best choreographer in the world if they are ready to make Trisha dance properly avoiding the usual steps.
Vivek is the only relief for those who are vexed with abnormal illogical features. His combo with Vijay has again worked entertaining the audiences.
When it comes to music, only couple of songs have been done well like ‘Dandana Darna and Pallanadhu Pallanadhu. While rest are something that is unwanted for the script, since they aren’t placed well at exact proper intervals.
Gopinath’s cinematography gives us a feel of watching Hollywood blockbuster movie Predator. The tone with brownish yellow right throughout the film gives more enhancements to action based sequences.
Valuating the film on whole, Kuruvi trails far behind Ghilli. Dharani should have worked more on pace of screenplay and diminished the absurdities.
