Water water everywhere and not a drop to drink…yes its drinking water dispute time again. This time though it is not Cavery dispute, this dispute has got a new name, Hoganekkal dispute. But there is common thing in both, its for water.

The protests started in Bangalore on Monday morning after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s statement in Chennai on Sunday that you can break the buses or our bones but we’ll go ahead with the Hogenakkal scheme.

The Rs.1,334 crore Hogenekkal scheme, envisaging an eventual supply of 160 million litres of water a day (MLD) to 40.4 lakh people in the dry districts of Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri, is being taken up with the funding of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. Karnataka officials have termed the project “illegal”, and former Chief Minister and BJP leader, B S Yeddyurappa during a visit to Hogenakal in Chamarajnagar district bordering Tamil Nadu earlier this month, said Tamil Nadu could not undertake the project as it is a matter of dispute with Karnataka.

Activists of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, which is spearheading the protests, stormed cinemas screening Tamil films in Bangalore. They pulled down movie hoardings and banners. After the vedike leaders requested the cinema owners to stop screening of Tamil films, they obliged and cancelled the shows from afternoon. The vedike and other Kannada groups had threatened to stop their screening and block Tamil television channels from April 9 if the issue was not sorted out by then.
